The Brazilian Association of Hematology, Hemotherapy and Cell Therapy (ABHH), aware of the catastrophic situation experienced by the State of Rio Grande do Sul due to the rains, initiated a humanitarian task force to ensure that patients are addicted to blood transfusion and, as well as, the maintenance of reasonable levels of blood stocks for possible emergency surgeries. The Association has also sent a letter to the General Coordination of Blood and Blood Products, addressed to the coordinator Joyce Aragão, making itself available for possible mobilizations in this regard.
“Like the mobilization we led during the COVID-19 pandemic years ago, this is a moment for all of us to make our possibilities available in an extreme situation,” comments hematologist Angelo Maiolino, president of ABHH, when expressing his dismay at the situation experienced. “There are many humanitarian fronts to guarantee the rescue of homeless people, but we must all be aware that the effects of this tragedy are lasting, unfortunately, and any prior mobilization can guarantee that many lives are saved,” she adds.
Communications Director of the ABHH, Renato Tavares, also hematologist and hemotherapist, reports that direct contacts have already been made with the main hemotherapy services and blood banks in the State and, in principle, the situation is relatively under control. “We will remain attentive to this situation so that we can help prevent an even greater tragedy, as a result of the widely reported events,” he says. “We know that many people undergoing onco-hematological treatment may need rapid support so that they are not harmed,” he concludes.
The ABHH remains attentive and will permanently monitor the situation and needs of the Hemotherapy and General Coordination Services for Blood and Blood Products.
